This episode of Inside Story looks at two ways that BT is helping to make organisations more efficient.
The first is by combining phone and data networks, something we’ve done for the fourth-largest employer in the world, the NHS, via the N3 network. Over a hundred organisations are now using the new N3 network to reduce the cost of internal calls as well as calls to mobiles, and they’ve already made more than six million low-cost calls. But as well as saving large amounts of money, the N3 network is also simpler to administer, saving management time, and is helping the NHS reduce their carbon footprint too.
Another organisation to see the financial and efficiency benefits of joining voice and data networks is National Express. The BT-hosted service gives them, at no extra cost, facilities like having a full internal directory on every phone. This makes finding and calling colleagues simpler and quicker, leaving more time for the day job.
Another way of improving efficiency is by bringing an organisation’s servers together in a single, state-of-the-art virtual data centre. Two councils at opposite ends of the UK have done just that. The City of Edinburgh Council used to have six hundred servers delivering applications to around twenty thousand desktops. They now just have two virtual data centres hosted by BT, managing everything through a single console.
And down in Norfolk, the County Council have consolidated into one virtual data centre software that was previously hosted locally in each of its four hundred and fifty schools. It will save them as much as four million pounds, as well as making it easier and quicker for teachers and students to access the information they need.
Meanwhile, international law firm Norton Rose appreciate just how flexible a BT Virtual Data Centre can be, and they also like that there’s no significant up-front costs involved. So organisations of all sizes are finding that soft phones are turning into hard cash, and virtual data centres are delivering real efficiency savings.
