Marauding gangs of children high on sugar, and students dressed as Zombies, pale into insignificance compared with the latest IT security threats roaming around this Halloween.
Because while you’re at your front door pretending to ponder the “trick or treat” question, other unseen, nefarious forces may be at work: using malware to log every keystroke you’ve made; destroying your operating systems; decrypting supposedly secure messages. And that thing in the sky, is it a witch on a broomstick or a drone spying on you?
What should give us all the jitters is the fact that legal protections in the security sphere are moving at a slower pace than the illegal and criminal elements; we’re continually being caught by the baddies.
It doesn’t have to be as scary as it sounds, however. There are ways to stay secure and protected from these horrors and the many others like them. The key is to stay vigilant, implement and follow good security practice and never, ever believe you’re invincible. It also helps if you don’t leave your IT Security backdoor open and ask for some ID from the caller who claims to be the Wicked Witch of the West.
