If you’ve ever moved your bank account or mobile phone from one provider to another, you’ll know how keen you are for everything to go smoothly, and to minimise the amount of time you’re without the service.
Now imagine you’re responsible for your company’s IT network and you’re considering moving to a new network. You can’t afford ANY mistakes or ANY downtime. This was the situation facing Occidental, who operates four city hotels and fifteen resorts mainly in Latin America. Their existing system was showing its age and was no longer the most cost-effective, or flexible, solution. But they couldn’t afford any disruption to their service during the transition to a new network.
Having looked at two other possible vendors, they chose BT because the price was competitive and because they could supply Occidental with the right service wherever needed. The new global network connects all of Occidental’s Latin American sites and provides them with email and internet connectivity. In addition to data, it also carries voice, and using it for internal voice calls is saving the company money. And in the near future they’ll be using it for video conferencing too, saving even more money.
But the major improvement has been to the network’s performance. Thanks to some clever optimizing software they now have four times the bandwidth of the old network, making it four times faster and meaning they can handle transactions much quicker, improving efficiency and customer service. So the company is more responsive, more productive, is saving money and has a flexible network that can grow and adapt to future demands. But what about that all-important transition from old network to new network?
Well the whole project was completed to schedule in six months, with zero downtime. The client was naturally relieved and delighted, describing BT’s work as “amazing”. For us at BT it’s not just about megabits and co-location hosting, it’s about giving peace of mind to people who trust us to deliver.
