Supply chain management in an unbalanced world with limited resources

Bas Burger, President Global Commerce at BT Global Services, recently spoke at BT’s Big Conversation summit in Hong Kong about the future of supply chain management and the end of limitless resources. We asked him about BT’s role in tomorrow’s supply chains.

Can you tell us a little about BT’s Big Conversation?

At BT we are engaged in a conversation with our customers to explore the implications of the world’s most important megatrends.  At four events, in Singapore, Bogota, Istanbul and Hong Kong, we have gathered business leaders to discuss four major megatrends: End to Limitless Resources, Instant Globalisation, Power of the Individual, and Unbalanced Economy. It has been a fascinating process because it allows us to receive immediate, face-to-face feedback on the extent to which our customers’ strategies are aligned with these megatrends. Ultimately these are trends we all face together and will need to adapt to together. Via these conferences we gain a better understanding of where our customers are going and the role that BT, given our assets and expertise, can play in those strategies. [Read more...]

How digitising the world might split the atom.

“If you or your children have jobs that can be digitised then you must change because at the current rate, they will be digitised and the job will no longer exist,” so warned Kevin Bloch, Chief Technology Officer, Cisco speaking at the BT executive summit in Sydney in February 2013.  He spoke about the evolution of two distinct economies: the atomic/physical and the networked/digital.

He shared Cisco’s view that currently only 1% of all the “atomic” devices in the world that could have a digital connection actually did so.  He challenged the audience to consider what the world would be like when it was 100% connected – as it will be – and to think hard about how their businesses would create a better future in that environment. Why doing more with less is the new norm

Doing more with less: it’s part of the “new normal”. Jean-Marc Frangos, MD, External Innovation at BT Open Innovation, shared some insightful approaches at our 2012 Singapore Summit.

Our natural assets are vital, yes. But we now live in a world of extreme pressure on other resources too. These include capital, after the end of “cheap money”. The cost of capital, and of all resources, requires greater operating returns to deliver the same level of added value. In other words, we have to learn to work smarter.

How will the world cope with the end to limitless resources?

Few would disagree. We are at the End to Limitless Resources. At our 2012 Singapore Business and Technology Leaders Summit, delegates heard where some of the specific resource pressures willcome from – in the region and around the world. It’s a Big Conversation that raises profound issues.

In Singapore, Anu Madgavkar, Senior Fellow, McKinsey Global Institute, explained that, by 2025, the “consuming class”will grow to 4.25 billion people. [Read more...]

What is resilience?

This year’s World Economic Forum is all about resilient dynamism – dealing with economic problems by adapting quickly. Being hardy in the face of disaster. And trying again when we fail.

Luis Alvarez, chief executive of BT Global Services, summed up what this means on the World Economic Forum’s blog. Being resilient means taking risks, he said. And technology can help. [Read more...]

Consumerisation skyrockets while BYOD security concerns remain

According to Juniper Research the number of employee owned mobile devices will more than double by 2014. It’s yet another impressive forecast. However, at the same time doubts and questions regarding BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) remain.

Let’s put the Juniper Research data in perspective. This year, the company says, almost 150 million people use their own smartphones and tablets in the enterprise. By 2014, 350 million will. That’s nearly 23% of the total installed base of these devices.

With Western Europe leading the pack regarding the number of consumer owned devices, this rapid growth raises questions. Often they concern the value and benefits of BYOD. However, even more often the key debated topic is BYOD and security. Earlier this month, Trend Micro found security remains the top concern in consumerisation.  [Read more...]

Agile Working can mean many things. Some view it as a way of reducing the demand on office space; others focus on reducing travel time or substituting expensive face to face meetings with on-line alternatives.
