Growth potential of the EU digital economy: research

According to research by Belgian Vlerick Business School, Europe has the potential to generate up to 1.5 billion extra jobs in the EU digital economy. In the report, ‘Online Jobs Boosting Europe’s competitiveness’, the authors write at least 400,000 extra jobs could be created. The internet sector is now found to employ 3.4 million people.

That’s approximately 1.6% of the total active population in the EU. The report, that was published this month, takes a detailed look at the economic value of the EU internet sector. In order to understand the growth opportunities, it’s important to first define what is meant by the internet sector and the digital economy. The authors categorized the internet ‘as an ecosystem consisting of various layers, including infrastructure, applications, intermediary, and commerce.’ [Read more...]

Civil Service Awards 2012

Hello from Gartner IT Expo in Barcelona, where several thousand IT executives and a highly-informed flock of analysts are engaging in their annual exploration of the state of the industry.  There are few surprises, and not a lot that’s new.  While the phrase “cautiously optimistic” is turning up in a variety of languages, Gartner’s CIO and CEO surveys still have five of the top ten priorities related to cost cutting.

There’s one word, however, coming up more than ever before: devices. [Read more...]

Social in the workplace: employees and executives disagree

The debate on the role of social networks and technologies within the corporate environment isn’t over. While many businesses have adopted social media for marketing and customer service purposes – albeit with different degrees of maturity – the full potential of social business and social in the workplace is still to be understood by most.

Furthermore, there is clearly no consensus on the role and potential of social networks in the workplace. The debate on the benefits of social networking in the workplace, has even taken a somewhat unexpected turn.

While the adoption of mobile and social technologies in the workplace was – and often still is – a ‘user-driven’ evolution (consumerisation, BYOD,…) there is a disconnect in how the “value of social networking to build and maintain workplace culture,” is perceived by executives and employees. Revised IT spending outlook 2012: cloud computing as a foundation

Gartner released a revised IT spending outlook for 2012. The company now expects worldwide IT spending to increase 3 percent from 2011, slightly higher than the 2.5% projection it announced last quarter. Cloud computing and consulting services are doing well… for a reason.

More important than the exact numbers are the underlying trends. The best news for the industry seems to be that “the outlook has at least stabilised,” as Gartner Research VP, Richard Gordon puts it. Nevertheless, with the euro zone crisis, a slowdown in China, virtually no changes in business confidence or consumer sentiment and a weaker U.S. recovery, Gartner remains cautious.

However, there are bright spots, and they are nearly all in the cloud and where IT meets business value.
