October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month

By Toby Weir-Jones, Vice President of Product Development, Managed Security Solutions Group, BT Global Services

While those of us who work in network security think that every month is cyber security awareness month, we know for most people that online security is something they don’t think about until something goes dreadfully wrong.  But, as with so many things, just a little bit of prevention is way better than the cure!

The folks at staysafeonline.org, a coalition of private and public organizations, have designated October as National Cyber Security Awareness Month – a time to focus on educating those who use the Internet (i.e., everyone!) on how to be online safely and how best to protect digital assets.  This year’s theme is that online security is a shared responsibility of online security and the understanding that “our cyber infrastructure is only as strong as the weakest link.”

For those of us who secure networks for a living, our responsibility is not just to provide preventative services, like Managed Security Monitoring or Managed Vulnerability Scanning, or even to fix things when they go wrong — we have a real responsibility to be our customers’ advocates for their continuing education.

Every Friday during October, the Managed Security Solutions Group Product Management Team will be sharing their thoughts on what businesses can do to foster a culture of cyber security awareness and preparedness.

As always, we hope you’ll comment on the articles, share your experiences, disagree and debate, and otherwise be a part of our community
