Challenges of VoLTE roaming, by Dhiraj Wazir, EE.

VoLTE is fast becoming a must for operators across the world. Dhiraj Wazir, Head of Interconnect and International Enablers, EE explains why this is the case, outlining the current VoLTE landscape and detailing the ongoing challenge facing the telecoms industry: VoLTE roaming.

Now being deployed by over 530 networks in 170 countries, 58% of the human race can enjoy the benefits of 4G/LTE. It’s only a natural evolution that VoLTE follows data on LTE. This in itself is a big challenge, but we’ve already got 86 networks in nearly 50 countries who have rolled this out, and the device manufacturers aren’t far behind with over 228 devices now capable of VoLTE calls. IPX – building the future.

The fact that the wave of data growth we are riding on today is about to break into a tsunami is probably a tired cliché. Internet of Things is being touted as the next big thing with various use cases like Smart meters and health monitors already being commercialised.

The advent of 5G with speeds of 60Gbps and latency as low as 1millisecond in trails are fast bringing science fiction into fact, driverless cars and remote surgery WILL be with us before 2020. [Read more…]

Business insights with Andrew: September 2015

In my last column earlier this year, I talked about the new opportunity areas we are exploring.

Building on the success of our initiatives, I would like to share that since we launched our wi-fi roaming service in July, we have already signed contracts with 8 carriers from China, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, South Africa, Hong Kong, Portugal and Brazil and we expect to sign more than 20 additional contracts this year. We are also looking to extend roaming to allow customers from these countries to roam in other countries, starting with the USA in October.

To complement the geographic reach of BT’s roaming signalling services for network operators, we also signed an interconnect deal with Syniverse for LTE Roaming. We will be partnering with them and using their existing roaming capabilities under a white-label for BT, married up with our existing capabilities. The parameters of the agreement between BT and Syniverse also include wi-fi roaming, and MNOs looking to partner with BT will also see their customers benefit from access to our nationwide wi-fi hotspot network. BT Global Telecom Markets, the international wholesale arm of BT has announced the signing of a deal to interconnect with Syniverse to complement the geographic reach of BT’s roaming signalling services for network operators. BT has recently launched a fully featured LTE roaming services portfolio for the carrier segment.

Interconnecting with Syniverse provides extended reach for BT’s existing global roaming offers in the LTE space. BT combines this with additional options on international Wi-fi roaming to create a one-stop-roaming approach for mobile operators who seek to reduce capital investment, expand their broadband roaming reach and link it seamlessly with their existing OSS/BSS landscape for an unparalleled end customer experience.
